The present 15th century fort was built by Sultan Qaytbay on the site of, and partly from the fragments of, the six times taller Pharos lighthouse, which has been destroyed in a series of earthquakes. Dating from the reign of Ptolemt II Philadelphos and renowned as one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, the Pharos could, by means of a mirror, direct a beam of reflected sunlight or the light of a fire far out to the sea.Entrance Fees: (Please see at the bottom of this page)
